Distrust of the Home Worker
With all the new technology available today, it just seems ridiculous when I read about how employers still don’t trust people to work from home. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people goofing off, sleeping at their desks, or milking a project when I worked in a “real” office. However, because they were “seen” working by the boss, the perception was that they were productive.
Shouldn’t the proof be in the pudding?
From “21st Century Business: Home working: a matter of trust:”
“Working from home is increasingly becoming a popular choice in Ireland for those seeking to avoid the traffic jams on our roads and those seeking a different kind of work/life balance.
The bonus for employers of home working is that the greater flexibility given to employees should lead to improved productivity, a reduced sickness/absentee cost, less stress and, ultimately, a more content worker.
However, results from a Europe-wide survey conducted by Coleman Parkes show employers on the island of Ireland are more wary than others about the impact flexible working has on their staff, with trust issues hampering the widespread adoption of working from home.
Some 40% of staff believed they would not be able to convince bosses they were putting in the hours while working from home. This compared to one in four in the rest of Europe.”
