Work at Home Organization Tips

By Barry Bell on February 21 2006

022106.jpg A friend of mine was telling me the other day that she didn’t think she’d ever be able to work at home because she just doesn’t have the discipline that it would require. While I think discipline is important, I really believe that organization is the key, so here are few tips I have found that have helped me keep on track with my multitude of work-at-home projects:

  • Designate days and times for specific tasks. For example, on Mondays I work on one of my jewelry blogs. I get all my entries written, coded, and loaded in that one day. Then I check on the posts throughout the week to make sure they drip okay, but other than that, I don’t have to worry about it.
  • When off track, get right back on ASAP. Sometimes stuff happens, like you have to take your cat to the vet. These sorts of situations can reek havoc with your schedule, but the best thing to do is make sure you get right back on track. As soon as you get home with Fluffy and you are sure she’s okay, get right back to work.
  • Prepare if at all possible. If you know of an event that will interrupt your schedule, like lunch with an old friend, prepare a head of time. If I know I’m going to be away when I normally am supposed to be writing, then I try to work a head as much as possible. Even if I can get a little extra work done, even a few extra blog posts, it can make a big difference when I get back to work.
